About us
Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc was founded at Kean University in Union, New Jersey in 1975. Our 17 Founding Mothers envisioned an organization that would provide a support system for the growing number of Latina students on college campuses. Our Founding Mothers made tremendous strides in scholarly excellence, cultural and political awareness, and community activism, providing an array of resources unprecedented for minority students. Moreover, these women sought to empower The Universal Woman through the principles of Unity, Love, and Respect.
Indeed, while LTA was the first sorority founded to support the Latina population, the organization has, from its founding, operated on an ethic of inclusion rather than exclusion. In keeping with the motto “Latin by tradition, not by definition,” LTA is a non-exclusionary organization and welcomes women of all races, ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations. Today, LTA consists of sisters representing over 120 different nationalities.
Today, LTA has grown to 121 undergraduate chapters across the nation and in Puerto Rico. Our alumni sisters, who continue to be trailblazers in every career field, truly epitomize LTA's lifelong sisterhood by remaining active through both Area Board and Alumnae Chapters. Whether at the undergraduate level or beyond, Lambda Ladies devote themselves fully to paving the way.
